Literacy and English-as-a-Second-Language
Overview:
In 2011, Zonta moves into its fourth year of grants and direct service to improve Lee County women’s literacy, especially among Hispanic women as parents of young children, for whom English is the second language. Literacy skills make an impact on two generations in a family; for young children, being read to regularly in English is one of the greatest predictors of their success in school.

Mission:
Zonta is partnering in its women’s literacy efforts with two Lee County agencies: Lee County School District’s “Parent University” program through Head Start and Early Childhood Learning Services; and Literacy Volunteers of Lee County (LVLC). Grants this year to “Parent University” will cover classroom learning materials, bilingual teaching assistance, and transportation monies for some 200 low-income women with young children. Zontians also volunteer weekly and tutor participants through this curriculum.
Zonta Partnership:
In a parallel initiative with LVLC, Zonta grants will fund curriculum materials for a new twice-weekly ESL tutoring program in the Harlem Heights neighborhood with 30 mothers of small children. Zonta members are being trained this spring as volunteer tutors who will guide participants in structured dialogues and reading skills. |
