Southwest Florida Addiction Services

Do you ever wonder what some of the local service organizations do to help the community? Here is one example of the wonderful help given by professional women who have great skills and knowledge to share.

On Wed., Sept 10, three Zontians (Joan Good, Ginger Parker, and Karen Pati) helped six residents of the transitional living centers at the Southwest Florida Addiction Services learn new skills. They participated in videotaped practice sessions to help the SWFAS residents develop job interviews skills. This is the culmination of the Job Skills class taken over the last 6 weeks. All six residents will receive a tape of their practice interview so they can review and continually improve their interview skills.

This program provides valuable life-long job skills for the people involved. Additionally, every interviewing session proves rewarding for the Zontians involved, a real win-win for everyone. This is just another way we can help others a great deal with very little effort!

Rosemary Boisvert, Program Coordinator at SWFAS took this opportunity to recognize Zontian Barbara Traum for her ongoing service and dedication to SWFAS. Barbara works with Rosemary to identify program needs that Zonta can help solve. Recent accomplishments include partnership in this Life Skills training program and the donation of additional training hardware (DVD/VCR player), and a sewing machine.

Zonta of Sanibel-Captiva welcomes two new members

During the October 1 meeting of Zonta of Sanibel-Captiva, Kara "KC" Cuscaden and Carol Simontacchi joined their 56 "island sisters' as full-fledged members. The local Zonta club is chartered club of Zonta International, a non-partisan and non-sectarian organization open to executive and professional women (and men) who are decision-makers, executives and professionals within their community. The mission of Zonta is to provide service on the local and global level to improve the legal, political, economic, education, health and professional status of women. We do this through advancing the understanding, goodwill, peace, justice and universal respect for human rights and fundamentals freedoms. We unite internationally to foster high ethical standards, to implement service programs and to provide mutual support and fellowship for members as we serve our communities, our nation and our universe.

Zonta of Sanibel-Captiva welcomes their two new members. KC Cuscaden is a "real" Floridian, born in Jacksonville, FL., the oldest of four daughters. Growing up, KC and her family moved a lot for her Dad's job, but the one constant in their lives was coming to Sanibel. KC was six years old on her first visit-- pre-causeway days-- when her Grandparents retired and moved here to manage the old Reef Motel. KC has been a full-time resident herself for 7 years and is an active Realtor at Karen Bell Realty Inc. on Captiva. Her son, Joshua, is 26 and is in the Peace Corps in Kazakhstan teaching English to students.

Carol Simontacchi is the proprietor of the new health food store in town, Island Nutrition Center, in Anchor Point. Carol is the author of several books on health and nutrition, plus two more due out soon. She hopes to receive her Ph.D. in Nutritional Biochemistry sometime next year. With a passion for education, she teaches people how to be healthy, from a holistic perspective. Carol anticipates working closely with Sanibel doctors to provide their patients with nutrition counseling, to make the best use of their treatment. She offers free one-on-one nutrition counseling through the store to those who wish to optimize their diet and health. Currently, she is co-authoring a book on autism spectrum disorders with a Florida physician. Plans are for a book on suffering from a Christian perspective. As part of her commitment to provide excellent health education to the island, Carol is hosting a series of seminars. These include a seminar on learning disorders (from ADD to autism) with Dr. Jeff Bradstreet, MD on December 6 and Dr. John Lee, MD in February to do a seminar on menopause, breast cancer, and other issues of female hormones. Both doctors are internationally renowned in their specialties. Whew!!! As though this is not enough, Carol is the mother of four teenagers.

LOCAL CLUBS UNITE? ZONTIANS INVADE KIWANAS

The Zonta Club is grateful to local Kiwanette, Bob Wimbush for his gracious invitation: "Kiwanis meets every Wednesday...but our standards are so low, even members of other service clubs, including timorous Zontettes who may be so proper and lady-like they are waiting for an invitation, are welcome."

Invitation accepted. On Wednesday April 23rd, eleven Zontians descended upon the Island House. Dressed in their Sunday best: lovely floral dresses, straw hats, white gloves, the ladies marched to the Island House in their white sox and sneakers carrying banners stating "I am Woman Hear me Roar" and Vote Yes for ERA. At first sight proprietor Marty Harrity considered locking the door, however he thought better of it, stepped aside and welcomed us inside.

The Zontians came in touting rally cries reminiscent of the 1960's Equal Rights movement. Led by Ginger Parker they chanted: What do we want? ERA.  When do we want it? NOW". Zontians came prepared to educate Kiwanians about Equal Rights for Women.

PreZident Doris Trowbridge greeted the group with the following plea: "We timorous, proper and ladylike Zontettes, are present in this sacred male domain by your most generous invitation. With all humility we present ourselves. We are women in all our finery, who stand with you, behind you, beside you and in front of you. We beseech your favor on behalf of the Equal Rights Amendment. Lend us your support. Hearken to our earnest appeal. Progress to bring equality and standing to your devoted helpmates, rests on your signing the petition we submit for your approval. Stand today with us so that our grandchildren may say of their grandfathers: He was there for Grandma when it counted!"

Zontians then distributed sign-up forms for the bus trip to Tallahassee the 'Rally on Tally' supporting women's rights. Kiwanis
President Stan Kucaba graciously acknowledged the club by offering Zonta PreZ Doris Trowbridge a Kiwanis cap, Doris reciprocated by trading in her floral/straw hat. In our opinion Stan has never looked better. Satisfied, the Zontians left, now chanting "1234 We're not doormats anymore!"

Islanders take note, a new period of inter-island club cooperation is on your doorstop. Be on the lookout for further fun, rivalry and cooperation.  Bob Wimbush replied "Everyone I've talked to loved it!! We've voted to make an appearance by dancing girls a regular part of our meetings." Zontians are confused, have Kiwanians have been deprived of female companionship for so long that they mistook a protest march for dancing girls? We do have a lot of work to do!

The Zonta club has therefore extended an invitation to the Kiwanians to join us for an education evening at the Vagina Monologues, May 7th at Barbara B. Mann. "The celebrated and provocative play that has become a cultural phenomenon worldwide" The show raises awareness and money to stop violence against women. The Vagina Monologues has raised millions of
dollars to stop violence against women and girls.

ZONTA CLUB RAISES $13,000 FOR LOCAL CHARITIES

Event organizers are celebrating another hugely successful Peek at the Unique, the annual fundraiser for the Zonta Club of Sanibel-Captiva. "We exceeded our goals, broke records and we all had a fabulous time," said Susan Dunn, co-chair. When all the numbers are in, Dunn said, net proceeds this year are expected to reach $13,000, earmarked for distribution among more than 20 local charities.

Now in its second year, Peek at the Unique features a guided bus tour of four distinctive homes on the islands. Enthusiastic response meant two buses had to be added to the original schedule of eight, Dunn said. The featured homes this year included a remodeled and expanded Gulf-view home at South Seas, and a 1940s, charmingly updated cottage on Captiva. On Sanibel, "peekers" visited an exotic beachfront condominium at Tigua Cay and a restful, mid-island home decorated in an Asian theme.

The 230 guests were graciously hosted from the moment of arrival at the Periwinkle Playhouse Theatre, through their guided tour on air-conditioned buses to the delicious refreshments served before and after the three-hour trip. More than 40 Zonta members (and a few husbands) volunteered their time to perform a myriad of tasks from parking to checking in guests to serving refreshments, and as guides on buses and in each home. In her message thanking members, co-chair Linda Uhler said: "The response from those who took the tour was very positive. There were many comments such as 'How do I sign up for next year?'"

At each home, a professional designer was on hand to describe elements of the décor. These included Debbie Huddleston of Architrave Interior Design and Space Planning; Beth Traucht from Floral Artistry; Tony Kwak from the Oriental Gallery in Fort Myers; and Leanne Ritchie, A.I.D., from George Parker, Inc.

Area businesses and individuals who made the event possible include, first of all, house sponsors: Barrier Island Title Services; Sanibel-Captiva Trust Company; George Parker, Inc.; and Susan Dunn, Realtor. Other financial support came from Dr. James E. Croley of the Cataract & Refractive Institute of Florida; and Bank of the Islands. In-kind sponsors included Bailey's Supermarkets, food and beverage donations; Key Lime Bistro, champagne; The Bean, speakers' lunches; Big Red Q, brochure printing; and Rene Atkins, graphic design. Four island florists each donated a beautiful floral arrangement for each house -- Weeds 'n' Things; Floral Artistry; Flower Shop of the Islands; and Captiva Cottage Flowers & Fine Gifts.

Finally, thanks are due to the Sanibel Community Association, for providing the use of the newly renamed Periwinkle Playhouse for the event.

Zonta’s "Peek" filling up fast

If you are planning on taking a Peek at the Unique, the guided tour of four unusual and fabulousLy decorated homes on the islands, on Saturday, March 15, do not delay in reserving space. Seats are limited and this popular event sold out last year.

The major fundraiser for the Zonta Club of Sanibel-Captiva, the "Peek" this year includes two homes on Captiva and two on Sambel. On Captiva, you will tour a channingly updated, 1946 beach cottage appropriately named "Old Yeller," and a stunning South Seas Plantation home that has been completely remodeled with a two-story addition. Just off the beach, the home has a view of the Gulf.

On Sanibel, you will visit a spacious, boldly decorated Gulf-front condominium at Tigua Cay on the island’s east end. -The second one is mid-island. Situated on a lake, the home has an Asian feel. The comfortable and serene atmosphere comes from the skillful use of color, fabric and wood. An eclectic mix of furnishings and decorations from the Orient shows off the interests of the owners -- look for a cabinet filled with figures carved from ivory, a beautifully decorated desk, and framed figures on the walls of the living room. Wide windows in the living area overlook the lake -- where there is no swimming as it hosts a pair of large affigators. One bedroom breaks from the theme of the rest of the house, and is affectionately known by the owners as the Indiana room, with many memories of home -- a cozy corner in which to remember one’s roots.

Your guide through this home is Tony Kwak of the Oriental Gallery in Fort Myers. The sponsor is the Sanibel-Captiva Trust Company.

Join us for a delightful Saturday on the islands. Call 936-5290 for reservations: you will be advised of your time to park at the SCA Periwinkle Playhouse across from the Community Center and depart for your approximately three-hour tour on your assigned bus. Tickets are $40, most of which is tax-deductible, and include refreshments. All funds raised will help local programs for women and children.

PEEK AT THE UNIQUE

If you are planning on taking a Peek at the Unique on March 15th, do not delay in ordering tickets. They are limited and it sold out last year. The telephone number for reservations is 936-5290. If you have had any difficulty dialing it, it is now functioning well. You will receive information regarding purchase of tickets as well as the time you need to be at the J. Howard Wood Theater on Periwinkle Way., Sanibel. This is where you will park and be assigned to a bus for the tour.

One of the homes you will visit is on Captiva, and aptly called "Old Yeller." Originally built in 1946, partly with bricks made with sand from the beach across the street, it has had its face lifted through massive renovation and is now a tastefully decorated 1100 square foot cottage. It sports an English garden, newly planted in the front and using native plants. This creates a charming entry into rooms that seem much more spacious than one might expect . Inside is the great room/dining area. Floors are of limestone inlaid with mother-of-pearl. The ceilings are of tongue and groove boards. Colors chosen by owner and tour guide Debbie Huddleston are mustard and plum, setting off the ivory of the floors.

Bend-board is used in the kitchen cabinets inset with Cotswold glass imported from England to add an antiqued appearance. Fabrics for window treatments and furniture are from England and India. It all comes together with an eclectic use of antique furniture to create a sophisticated yet comfortable European beach cottage.

A whimsical note is in the bathroom where showers are decorated with glass fish and tiles from California, giving the bather a sense of being in the ocean with the fish.

The sponsor for "Old Yeller" is Susan Dunn, Realtor.

Join us for a delightful Saturday on the islands taking a Peek at the Unique, the annual fund-raiser for the Zonta Club of Sanibel-Captiva. You will be helping local programs for women and children.

"Old Yeller" was built on Captiva in 1946.

PEEK AT THE UNIQUE

February 11, 2003

If you enjoy seeing unusual homes, mark your calendars for the annual Zonta Peek at the Unique home tour, set this year for Saturday, March 15

Among the four homes to be part of this year's event is a Gulf-front condominium at Tigua Cay. Located on Sanibel's East End, the condo is boldly decorated and offers a palette for the use of flowers and plants as design accessories. Beth Traucht of Floral Artistry, Sanibel will demonstrate many ways to enhance décor with floral arrangements.

This condominium is a three-bedroom, three-bath unit on two floors It is beautifully decorated and features a distinctive round window well recognized by beach walkers.

Tigua Cay is sponsored by Barrier Island Title Services, Inc. All home and event sponsors assist Zonta in raising money to support local charities aiding women and children.

Next, a home at South Seas Plantation is just off the beach with a lovely view of the Gulf. This house has had a two-story addition and meticulous renovation to the rest of the building. Completed about a year ago, and a year and a half in the doing. It is truly magnificent . From floors of Brazilian cherry, to woven reed mats as part of the cathedral ceiling in the living room, a powder room with narrow bamboo strips on the walls and striped fabric on that ceiling, and a collection of framed butterflies, to the kitchen with a back-splash of sea shells and three handsome bedrooms each with a unique bath Then on to the second floor sitting area, where the ceiling is festooned with glass floats for fish nets. Walls throughout this floor feature boards resembling barn boards and all painted in soft colors that create the perfect mood for each room. A wonderful master bedroom suite, and throughout dramatic and imaginative detail, furniture all distinctive and beautiful, ten-foot ceilings, and deck looking out on the Gulf , all under the watchful eye of interior designer Richard Keith Langham of New York. Your guide will be Leanne Ritchie, A.I.D., staff designer at George Parker, Inc. Leanne was formerly associated with Robb & Stuckey and Freestyle Interiors.

George Parker, Inc. is the sponsor of this house and completed the renovation.

The tour will also include a newly updated Captiva beach cottage that was built in 1946, and a home on Sanibel where the theme is Asian, featuring examples of art and furniture exemplifying the ways in which one can create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

The tour, which takes groups to the homes by bus, lasts about three hours. Reservations are required. Busses will leave from the J. Howard Wood Theatre. Tickets are $40. For details, please call Linda Robison at 472-8199.

The Peek at the Unique tour will include this updated Captiva beach cottage (above) decorated with an Asian theme.
